Role: Embedded Systems Test Engineer (Freelance)

Overview
We are supporting a space-sector client seeking an experienced Embedded Systems Engineer with a strong testing and validation focus. The role involves hands-on lab work validating MCU-based systems and communication interfaces, with an emphasis on robustness and automation.
Key Responsibilities
Perform hardware-level testing and validation of embedded MCU systems
Work hands-on with Arduino Portenta H7 platform
Develop and execute test plans for communication interfaces
Validate and debug RS422 and serial communication links
Test and analyse Ethernet communication performance and reliability
Build automated test setups using single-board computers (e.g., Raspberry Pi or similar) interfacing with daughter boards
Support fault finding, root cause analysis, and system-level debugging
Work extensively in a lab environment with real hardware setups
Required Skills & Experience
Strong background in embedded systems engineering (MCU-focused)
Hands-on experience with Portenta H7 (or similar STM32-based platforms)
Solid understanding of:
RS422 / UART / serial protocols
Ethernet (TCP/IP, embedded networking)
Proven experience in hardware bring-up, testing, and validation
Experience building or scripting test automation frameworks
Comfortable working with:
Oscilloscopes
Logic analysers
Lab debugging tools
Experience interfacing single-board computers with custom hardware
Nice-to-Have (especially for space clients)
Experience in aerospace / space / automotive-grade systems
Familiarity with high-reliability or safety-critical systems
Exposure to environmental or stress testing setups
