Freelance Control Systems Engineer (GNC)
Location: Onsite
Contract Duration: 12+ months

Project Overview
We are supporting an innovative space technology programme developing next-generation laser communication systems designed to deliver high-speed connectivity from space to ground. As the project enters a critical phase of product development, we are looking for an experienced Control Systems Engineer specialising in Pointing, Acquisition & Tracking (PAT) to play a key role in the success of upcoming missions.
Role Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and validate control systems for Pointing, Acquisition & Tracking (PAT)
- Perform system modelling, identification, and lab-based characterisation of hardware and software components
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams across hardware, software, and systems engineering
- Support integration, testing, and validation activities throughout the product lifecycle
- Produce and review high-quality technical documentation
Required Experience & Skills
- 3+ years’ experience in Guidance, Navigation & Control (GNC) engineering
- Master’s degree in Control Engineering, Space Engineering, or a related field
- Hands-on experience with system identification and real-system characterisation in lab environments
- Experience across the full development lifecycle: design → integration → validation
- Background in space systems and/or complex multidisciplinary engineering projects
- Experience with embedded systems and/or real-time control
- Strong proficiency in MATLAB / Simulink and scripting (e.g. Python)
- Comfortable working in Linux-based environments
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively in international teams
- Detail-oriented with a high standard of technical execution and documentation
