Assistant Transport Planner

Role Overview

Assistant Transport Planners support senior colleagues in the delivery of a variety of transport planning and infrastructure projects. The role includes involvement in data collection and analysis, technical reporting, transport modelling, and the preparation of documents such as Transport Assessments and Travel Plans. Individuals in this role are expected to demonstrate strong analytical skills, contribute effectively to collaborative project teams, and support the successful delivery of projects while continuing to develop their technical expertise.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, and Travel Plans to support planning applications.

  • Collect, analyse, and interpret transport data using tools such as TRICS, TEMPro, and Excel.

  • Contribute to junction capacity analysis using industry-standard software, including Junctions 10 (ARCADY/PICADY) and LinSig.

  • Support the production of plans and technical diagrams using GIS or AutoCAD (training provided where required).

  • Conduct research into transport policy, local development plans, and planning frameworks.

  • Undertake site visits, transport surveys, and data collection exercises.

  • Attend project meetings and support client communications under the guidance of senior team members.

  • Assist in the preparation of technical reports, presentations, and supporting documentation.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across planning, engineering, and development teams to deliver project objectives.

Essential Qualifications & Skills

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Transport Planning, Geography, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, or a related discipline; alternatively, relevant industry experience will be considered.

  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.

  • Demonstrated interest in transport planning, sustainable travel, infrastructure development, and emerging mobility solutions.

  • Proactive and organised approach with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Experience using transport planning software such as TRICS, TEMPro, Junctions 10 (ARCADY/PICADY), and LinSig.

  • Familiarity with UK planning policy, local transport plans, and development management processes.

  • Experience using GIS, AutoCAD, or similar spatial and design software.

  • Understanding of active travel, public transport, and sustainable transport initiatives.

  • Previous experience within a transport planning, engineering, or consultancy environment.
