Senior Freelance Accountant
About the Opportunity
Our client is a leading Belgian e-commerce and healthcare-related organisation, part of a larger retail group. To support a finance improvement initiative, they are seeking an experienced Senior Freelance Accountant to join the finance team on an interim basis.
This assignment offers the opportunity to make an immediate impact by reviewing, strengthening, and optimising key accounting processes and records within a dynamic and fast-paced business environment.
The Assignment
As part of a finance improvement project, you will leverage your expertise to analyse, challenge, and improve various accounting processes and records. The successful consultant will be able to quickly assess current situations, identify risks and inconsistencies, and implement practical solutions.
This role is best suited to a highly experienced accounting professional who can operate autonomously from day one.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed reviews of accounting records and identify areas for improvement.
- Analyse supplier and customer accounts, investigate discrepancies, and recommend corrective actions.
- Review and challenge existing accounting entries, controls, and processes to ensure accuracy and compliance.
- Support the clean-up and reconciliation of historical accounting records.
- Review and justify balance sheet and profit & loss accounts.
- Improve the quality, reliability, and integrity of accounting data.
- Collaborate with finance leadership and accounting teams to support accurate financial closings.
- Perform ad hoc accounting and financial analyses as required.
- Provide practical recommendations to enhance accounting processes and controls.
- Ensure compliance with applicable Belgian accounting and tax regulations.
Candidate Profile
Experience & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in general accounting.
- Proven experience in accounting remediation projects, reconciliations, internal audits, or process optimisation initiatives.
- Experience within multi-entity or international organisations is advantageous.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of Belgian accounting standards.
- Solid understanding of Belgian VAT and intra-community VAT regulations.
- Advanced Excel skills and experience with accounting systems such as BOB50, Isabel, SAP, or similar platforms.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to identify inconsistencies quickly and implement practical solutions.
- Comfortable working independently while maintaining strong collaboration with stakeholders.
- Detail-oriented, pragmatic, and results-focused.
- Professional proficiency in French is required.
- Knowledge of English and/or Dutch is advantageous.
