Environmental Protection Officer

Our Local Authority client based in Nottinghamshire is searching for an Environmental Protection Officer to join their growing team. They are looking for an individual to come on a contract basis for an initial 3-month period, with the possibility of extension. This is an excellent opportunity to support a busy Environmental Health service, undertaking a varied caseload across environmental protection and regulatory functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Investigate statutory nuisance complaints, including noise, smoke and other environmental matters.
  • Undertake environmental health investigations and gather evidence in accordance with relevant legislation.
  • Respond to planning consultations and provide technical environmental health advice.
  • Prepare reports, letters, notices and other formal documentation.
  • Support contaminated land investigations and associated enquiries.
  • Assist with Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) activities.
  • Support the regulation of permitted processes under Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) legislation.
  • Work collaboratively with internal departments, external agencies and partner organisations.
  • Maintain accurate case records and utilise relevant databases and systems.
  • Attend site visits, meetings and court proceedings where required.

Required Experience

  • Previous experience working within a Local Authority Environmental Protection or Environmental Health team.
  • Experience investigating statutory nuisance complaints and environmental health matters.
  • Experience preparing technical reports, formal correspondence and enforcement documentation.
  • Knowledge of Environmental Health legislation and enforcement procedures.
  • Experience responding to planning consultations.
  • Experience managing competing priorities and working to tight deadlines.
  • Strong customer service and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience dealing with challenging or confrontational situations.
  • Experience working collaboratively with external agencies and partners.
  • Competent use of Microsoft Office applications and case management databases.

Desirable (optional)

  • Experience undertaking contaminated land investigations.
  • Experience with Local Air Quality Management and Industrial Permitting (PPC).
  • Knowledge of IDOX Uniform.
  • Diploma in Acoustics or equivalent qualification.
  • Relevant Environmental Health qualification.
  • Experience preparing evidence for legal proceedings and attending court.
