What Does “Hands On Experience” Actually Mean ?
“Hands-on experience” is appearing in almost every hardware position requirement. Yet it’s rarely defined and candidates and employers often interpret it differently.
Does it mean time spent in a lab? A strong university project ? Or something else entirely?
In hardware recruitment, “hands on” is shorthand for something much more specific.
Here’s what it actually looks like.
What “hands-on” is NOT
Reading books, learning through videos, or completing university projects and lab time (whilst valuable), simply isn’t enough on its own.
That’s because there’s a clear gap between theory and reality. In a lab or classroom setting everything is designed to work. Real-world hardware doesn’t offer that luxury. Experienced engineers have spent time finding faults under pressure, using things like Oscilloscopes, thermal cameras and power analysers, diagnosing and solving them in practice.
This is the gap “hands-on experience” is really pointing to, not whether you’ve used the tools but whether you’ve faced the problems that only show up outside a controlled environment.
What “hands-on” actually means
There’s a significant difference between supporting a project and being responsible for it. Reviewing a schematic design, sitting in on a bring-up session, or contributing to a validation text plan is valuable experience, but it’s not the same as owning the outcome.
Employers are often looking for engineers who have taken hardware through the full journey themselves :
- Schematic design
- Layout review
- Prototype bring-up
- Debugging
- Validation
What sets these engineers apart isn’t that they’ve touched every stage, it’s that they’ve been accountable for the outcome at each one. When something doesn’t work the first time (in hardware it rarely does), they’re the ones who have to work out why, fix it, and carry that decision through to the next stage. This kind of experience is difficult to teach via books or in a lab.
Why is this experience so important ?
It’s often said that around 68% of hardware projects face delays due to design flaws and insufficient testing, it’s easy to see why. A tiny mistake or undetected design flaw, if discovered late in the process or after the product’s release date, can lead to costly redesigns, project delays, and damage to a company’s reputation.
Experienced hardware engineers have seen this play out first hand. They’ve seen what happens when tolerances are too tight, margins are too small, and assumptions don’t match reality, and knowing exactly how expensive a small oversight can become is something that is again, difficult to teach.
CAD software teaches students how to draw a line. Hands-on experience teaches them what happens when that line refuses to cooperate with reality.

How do you get “hands-on” experience in the first place?
You don’t need to own an entire life cycle to start building real experience. Personal projects or open source hardware projects (like building your own PCB from scratch, ordering it, and working out the issue when it doesn’t work the first time) expose you to real world failure in a way coursework doesn’t. Debugging roles etc, get you closer to a real experience faster than designing only roles. Volunteering for the parts of a project nobody wants (fault finding a returned unit, chasing a yield issue) builds the exact experience employers are looking for.

To summarise, “hands-on experience” is less about which tools you’ve used. It’s about whether you’ve experienced the realities of owning and bringing a physical product to life throughout the full journey – success, setbacks and everything else in between.
