Town Planner

Vivid Resourcing

Location: Cambridge
Contract: Permanent

About the role

Our client is an architectural practice based in Cambridge, looking to appoint a Town Planner to join its team on a permanent basis. The role sits alongside architects and designers, giving planning input at every stage of a project, from early feasibility through to the submission and determination of planning applications.

The successful candidate will advise on planning policy, site constraints and the likelihood of securing consent, helping project teams shape schemes that are deliverable as well as well designed. They will prepare and coordinate planning submissions, manage relationships with local planning authorities and work with clients, consultants and stakeholders to keep applications moving.

This is a role for a planner who enjoys working closely with design teams and wants to see their advice reflected in the finished scheme. The work covers a range of project types and scales, with the chance to take on responsibility and develop a regional profile over time.

Main responsibilities

  • Provide planning advice to architects, designers and clients at feasibility, design and delivery stages
  • Prepare, coordinate and submit planning applications, including householder, full, outline and discharge of conditions applications
  • Write planning statements, design and access statements and supporting documents
  • Review national and local planning policy, site history and constraints to assess development potential
  • Liaise with local planning authorities, case officers and statutory consultees throughout the application process
  • Manage pre-application discussions and negotiate on the scope and terms of planning conditions
  • Work with the wider project team and external consultants to coordinate technical inputs to submissions
  • Monitor applications through determination and advise on appeals where required
  • Keep up to date with changes in planning legislation, policy and local plan developments

Requirements

  • A degree in town planning, or a related discipline, from an accredited institution
  • Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), or progress towards chartership
  • Experience preparing and managing planning applications in England
  • A good working knowledge of the National Planning Policy Framework and local plan policy
  • Experience of working with local planning authorities and handling pre-application engagement
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and persuasive planning documents
  • The ability to work collaboratively with architects and multidisciplinary teams
  • Good organisation and time management, with the ability to manage several projects at once

The offer

This is a permanent position based in Cambridge. Salary and benefits will be confirmed with candidates. You will join an established architectural practice, working directly with design teams on a varied project portfolio.

If you are a Town Planner looking to bring your planning expertise into a design-led environment, this role offers variety, influence and long-term progression. Apply below.
