Engineering Lead – Embedded Linux & Display Systems (Freelance)

Freelance Contract | Until End of 2026 (Approx. 6 Months) | Austria | Hybrid Working (Ideally 3 Days Onsite per Week)

We are supporting an innovative technology organisation developing advanced display, control, and computing solutions for demanding industrial applications. They are seeking an experienced Engineering Lead with a strong background in Embedded Linux to oversee both the technical direction and day-to-day leadership of a software development team.

This opportunity combines hands-on technical expertise with team leadership, stakeholder engagement, and delivery responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of embedded software engineers, fostering collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
• Provide technical oversight for Embedded Linux platform development across multiple projects.
• Coordinate development activities, resource planning, and delivery schedules to ensure successful project execution.
• Encourage the adoption of modern development practices, including AI-assisted engineering tools where appropriate.
• Drive process improvements and ensure compliance with established software development methodologies.
• Act as a key technical interface between customers, project teams, and internal stakeholders.
• Support capability development within the team and help shape future technical expertise.
• Contribute to architecture discussions and guide complex technical decision-making.

Required Experience

• Degree-qualified in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Strong practical experience developing software for Embedded Linux platforms.
• Proven expertise with technologies such as:
  • Linux Kernel
  • U-Boot
  • Yocto / Build Systems
  • Git and modern software configuration management
• Experience delivering software for complex embedded products, ideally within automotive, transportation, industrial machinery, or similar sectors.
• Familiarity with AI-enabled development, productivity, or analysis tools.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work effectively within international and cross-functional teams.
• Fluent English language skills.

Desirable Experience

• Previous people management or technical leadership experience.
• Exposure to software project planning and execution.
• Experience working within multinational engineering organisations.
• German language skills would be beneficial but are not essential.

• Duration: Approximately 6 months, running through to the end of the year
• Location: Austria
• Working Pattern: Hybrid, with an expectation of 3 days per week onsite (preferred)
