About the role
Our client, a planning consultancy, is looking for a Senior Planner to join their team in Stevenage on a permanent basis. The role involves leading planning projects for a range of clients and supporting the delivery of applications, appraisals and strategic advice.
You will manage your own workload and take responsibility for projects from early appraisal through to determination. The position suits a planner who is comfortable advising clients directly, working with project teams and supporting more junior colleagues as they develop.
The successful candidate will bring sound technical knowledge, commercial awareness and a thoughtful approach to client relationships. You will be trusted with real responsibility and have the opportunity to shape the outcome of projects.
Main responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of planning projects, from site appraisal and strategy through to application and determination
- Prepare and submit planning applications and supporting documents, including planning statements
- Advise clients on planning policy, site potential, risk and the best route to securing consent
- Coordinate input from architects, technical consultants and other members of the project team
- Engage with local planning authorities, stakeholders and the community on behalf of clients
- Negotiate planning conditions and, where required, contribute to legal agreements
- Support appeals and representations to local plan consultations
- Supervise and mentor junior members of the team
- Contribute to business development, including client meetings and the preparation of fee proposals
Requirements
- A degree or postgraduate qualification in town planning or a related discipline
- Chartered membership of the RTPI, or close to achieving it
- Significant experience in town planning, ideally within a consultancy environment
- Sound knowledge of the National Planning Policy Framework, planning legislation and the decision-making process
- A track record of managing projects and securing planning permissions
- Strong report writing, negotiation and client communication skills
- Experience supporting or supervising junior colleagues
- The ability to work from Stevenage
