About the role
Our client, an engineering organisation, is looking for an experienced Senior Planner to join its team on a contract basis. The role is responsible for building and maintaining the plans that keep engineering projects and production activity on schedule, bringing together information from engineering, procurement, production and project management.
You will develop detailed schedules, track progress against baseline and report clearly on delays, risks and dependencies. You will work closely with project managers, engineers and supply chain colleagues to understand constraints, sequence work sensibly and agree realistic recovery actions when plans move off track.
As a senior member of the planning function, you will also set the standard for how planning is done, guiding colleagues, improving planning processes and giving management the information needed to make decisions on resources, delivery dates and priorities. The successful candidate will be comfortable working across disciplines and presenting a clear, honest picture of progress.
Main responsibilities
- Develop and maintain integrated project and production schedules, from baseline through to delivery
- Break down project scope into work packages, activities and milestones, with clear logic and dependencies
- Track progress against plan and report on variances, critical path and forecast completion dates
- Identify risks, constraints and delays early and work with project teams to agree recovery actions
- Plan and coordinate resources, capacity and materials with engineering, production and procurement teams
- Support change control by assessing the impact of scope changes on schedule and delivery
- Prepare regular planning reports and present progress to project managers and senior stakeholders
- Review and challenge schedules prepared by colleagues, suppliers and subcontractors
- Provide guidance to junior planners and promote consistent planning practice
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of planning tools, templates and processes
Requirements
Essential
- Proven experience as a Planner or Senior Planner within an engineering, manufacturing or project-based environment
- Strong experience of building and managing schedules using planning software such as Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project
- Good understanding of critical path analysis, resource planning and progress measurement
- Ability to read and interpret technical information and work with engineering teams
- Clear communication skills, with the ability to explain schedule status and risks to technical and non-technical audiences
- Strong attention to detail and a structured, analytical approach
Desirable
- Experience of planning within capital projects, equipment manufacturing or industrial engineering
- Knowledge of ERP systems and their use in production and materials planning
- A relevant planning or project management qualification
- Previous experience of working on a contract basis
