Senior Hardware Engineer
I’m supporting a customer developing rugged, outdoor IoT products who is looking for a Senior Hardware Engineer to own electronics hardware design from concept to delivery. This role is ideal for an experienced hardware professional who can translate product innovation into robust, manufacturable, field-proven designs and provide technical leadership within a multidisciplinary team.
Role Overview
As a Senior Hardware Engineer, you will be responsible for the complete hardware development lifecycle from concept and system architecture through schematic design, prototyping, testing, certification, and production readiness. You will work closely with firmware, data, and connectivity teams (Sub-GHz, LTE-M/NB-IoT, GPS) to deliver reliable hardware that performs in demanding environments. You’ll also coach a hardware engineer in daily practice and manage external development partners.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop electronics hardware designs for outdoor IoT products, from concept and system architecture to schematics and prototypes.
- Identify hardware requirements from product innovation and translate them into clear specifications and design approaches.
- Coach and guide a hardware engineer in daily cooperation
- Collaborate closely with firmware, data, and connectivity teams (Sub-GHz, LTE-M/NB-IoT, GPS) to ensure smooth system-level integration.
- Manage external development partners, guaranteeing quality, planning, and knowledge transferability.
- Coordinate testing, validation, and certification, including CE, IP67, battery safety, and HALT/HAST.
- Optimize designs for Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Test (DFT) to ensure efficient, reliable production.
- Drive modularization and scalability to enable faster scale-up and smarter outsourcing.
- Analyze and solve complex hardware design challenges in a structured, pragmatic manner.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of hardware development processes and best practices.
Skills & Experience
- Completed technical college or university education in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, Embedded Systems, Mechatronics, or similar.
- Around 8 years of experience in electronics hardware design, preferably in IoT, wireless, or robust embedded systems.
- Proven experience across the full hardware journey: concept → design → testing → certification.
- Knowledge of certification and testing standards such as CE, IP ratings (IP67), and battery safety; HALT/HAST experience is a strong advantage.
- Quality-conscious working style, e.g. Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and/or Design for Six Sigma (DFSS).
- Experience managing external partners and suppliers, with a confident, hands-on approach to directing their work.
- Strong hardware design and PCB layout skills, with solid knowledge of analogue and digital electronics and various microcontroller platforms.
- Advantage: knowledge of RF technology, embedded software, Altium, and/or OrCAD.
- Pragmatic and analytical problem-solver who carefully weighs design trade-offs.
- Comfortable working both independently and within a multidisciplinary team.
- Clear communicator, able to explain complex technical choices to engineers and stakeholders.
- Proactive, flexible, and able to balance technical quality with project interests.
