Freelance Senior Embedded IoT Developer

Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Embedded IoT Developer to support the development of advanced industrial IoT solutions. This is a freelance opportunity based in Hannover, offering the chance to work on cutting-edge embedded systems within an industrial environment.
You will play a key role across the full development lifecycle—from low-level firmware development through to application-layer integration—while also contributing to technical leadership and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop embedded software for industrial IoT devices
- Work across the full stack of embedded systems, from low-level drivers and firmware to higher-level application software
- Contribute to the architecture and design of IoT solutions
- Integrate hardware and software components in collaboration with electronics teams
- Support and participate in electronics development activities (schematics, debugging, validation)
- Lead or support technical project delivery, ensuring timelines and deliverables are met
- Perform testing, debugging, and optimization of embedded systems
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including hardware, firmware, and cloud/IoT platform engineers
Key Requirements
- Proven experience as a Senior Embedded Developer within industrial IoT environments
- Strong programming skills across low-level and application-level development (e.g. C/C++, embedded Linux, RTOS)
- Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols (e.g. MQTT, Modbus, CAN, OPC UA is a plus)
- Hands-on experience with electronics development, including circuit-level understanding and debugging
- Experience working across hardware-software integration
- Demonstrated project leadership or technical lead experience
- Ability to work independently in a freelance consulting capacity
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills
Nice to Have
- Experience with wireless communication technologies (e.g. BLE, Wi-Fi, LoRa, NB-IoT)
- Familiarity with cloud IoT platforms (e.g. Azure IoT, AWS IoT)
- Knowledge of security best practices in IoT systems
- German language skills (beneficial but not required)
