About the role

Our client is a law firm in Somerset looking for a Private Client Solicitor to join its team on a locum basis. The role centres on a varied private client caseload, supporting individuals and families with the planning, protection and administration of their affairs.

The successful candidate will manage matters from instruction through to completion, working directly with clients at what can be a sensitive point in their lives. The work covers wills, estate administration, lasting powers of attorney and trusts, and calls for clear communication and sound judgement alongside technical accuracy.

You will work within an established legal team, with support from colleagues and colleagues’ experience to draw on. The firm is looking for someone who can pick up a live caseload, manage it with a high degree of independence and maintain continuity for clients.

Main responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of private client matters, including wills, probate and estate administration
• Prepare and advise on lasting powers of attorney and, where relevant, Court of Protection applications
• Draft wills, trusts and related documentation tailored to each client’s circumstances
• Advise clients on estate planning, inheritance tax and the protection of family assets
• Handle the administration of estates, including applications for grants of representation, asset collection and distribution to beneficiaries
• Meet clients, take instructions and explain legal options in clear, practical terms
• Maintain accurate case records, time recording and file management in line with firm and regulatory requirements
• Work with colleagues, financial advisers and other professionals where matters require it

Requirements

• Qualified solicitor in England and Wales with a current practising certificate
• Proven experience in private client work, including wills, probate and estate administration
• Working knowledge of lasting powers of attorney, trusts and inheritance tax planning
• Ability to manage your own caseload and meet deadlines with minimal supervision
• Strong drafting, communication and client care skills
• Good understanding of SRA regulations, including anti-money laundering and file management standards
• Confident use of case management and practice management systems
• Able to work from the firm’s Somerset location

This is a locum position based in Somerset. Rate, start date and duration are to be confirmed with candidates. You will join an established legal team and take on a live private client caseload from the outset.
