Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

Our client, a machine builder, is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Herentals on a permanent basis. The role involves designing and developing machines, taking designs from concept through to detailed drawings and supporting them through build and commissioning.

You will work closely with colleagues in engineering, production and assembly, as well as with customers and suppliers, to turn requirements into practical, buildable solutions. The position suits an engineer who is comfortable working independently, taking ownership of their projects and contributing ideas in a small to medium-sized business where roles are broad and decisions are made quickly.

The successful candidate will bring solid machine construction experience, sound technical judgement and a hands-on approach. You will take on real responsibility and have the chance to see your designs through to working machines.

Main responsibilities

• Design and develop mechanical machines and machine components, from concept through to detailed design
• Produce 3D models, assemblies and technical drawings using SolidWorks or Inventor
• Select components, materials and standard parts, and prepare bills of materials
• Carry out design calculations and checks to make sure designs are robust, safe and manufacturable
• Work with production, assembly and purchasing teams to resolve design and build issues
• Support the build, testing and commissioning of machines, and implement design improvements where needed
• Liaise with customers and suppliers on technical requirements, specifications and changes
• Keep design documentation accurate, complete and up to date
• Contribute to the continuous improvement of products, designs and engineering processes

Requirements

• A master’s degree in Industrial Engineering or a similar discipline
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in machine construction
• Experience designing with SolidWorks or Inventor
• An SME mindset, with a practical, hands-on and flexible approach
• Fluent Dutch and English, both written and spoken
• Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
• Good communication skills, with the confidence to work with colleagues, customers and suppliers
• Located within a 30 to 40 minute drive of Herentals
