Housing Options Officer

Vivid Resourcing

Location: Berkshire
Contract: Permanent

About the role

Our client is looking for a Housing Options Officer to join their housing service on a permanent basis, helping residents who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to find safe and sustainable housing solutions.

Main responsibilities
  • Carry out housing needs assessments and provide advice and assistance to households facing homelessness
  • Deliver homelessness prevention and relief duties in line with the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017
  • Complete statutory homelessness assessments and make well-reasoned, legally sound decisions
  • Develop and review personalised housing plans with applicants
  • Arrange and manage temporary accommodation where required
  • Work with private landlords and housing providers to secure suitable accommodation, including options in the private rented sector
  • Liaise with support services, health, social care and voluntary sector partners to support vulnerable residents
  • Respond to reviews and appeals and support the council’s legal position where challenged
  • Maintain accurate case records and ensure compliance with data protection and safeguarding requirements
  • Contribute to service development and team performance targets
Requirements

Essential

  • Experience working in housing options, homelessness prevention or a similar frontline housing role
  • Working knowledge of homelessness legislation, including the Housing Act 1996 and the Homelessness Reduction Act 2017

  • Strong interviewing, assessment and negotiation skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to handle sensitive conversations
  • Competence with housing case management systems and Microsoft Office

Desirable

  • Previous experience within a local authority housing team
  • A relevant housing qualification, such as CIH, or progress towards one
  • Experience working with households with complex needs or safeguarding concerns
