About the role
Our client is a local authority in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, looking to appoint a Food Environmental Health Officer on an interim basis. The role supports the delivery of the council’s food safety function, helping protect public health by making sure local food businesses meet their legal obligations.
The successful candidate will carry out food hygiene and food standards inspections and interventions across a mixed range of premises, from small independent businesses to larger food producers and retailers. You will assess compliance, offer practical advice to business operators and use proportionate enforcement where it is needed. You will also investigate complaints, respond to food alerts and look into cases of food-related illness.
You will work as part of a wider environmental health team and with partners such as the Food Standards Agency and UK Health Security Agency. The role needs someone who can manage their own caseload, make sound professional judgements and get on with the work quickly. Rate and working arrangements will be confirmed with candidates.
Main responsibilities
- Carry out food hygiene and food standards inspections and interventions in line with the Food Law Code of Practice
- Assess businesses against the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme and carry out rating visits and re-visits
- Provide clear advice and guidance to food business operators on legal requirements and best practice
- Investigate food complaints, food poisoning outbreaks and notifications of infectious disease
- Take proportionate enforcement action, including serving notices, preparing formal warnings and supporting prosecution files where required
- Respond to food alerts and product recalls
- Carry out sampling and follow up on results
- Maintain accurate inspection records and update the council’s case management system
- Work with colleagues, partner agencies and other council services
- Help bring the programme of interventions up to date
Requirements
Essential
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in Environmental Health, or equivalent, with Chartered or Registered status (CIEH or equivalent)
- Authorisation or the competence to be authorised to carry out food hygiene and food standards inspections under the Food Law Code of Practice
- Recent experience of food regulatory work within a local authority or comparable setting
- Sound knowledge of food safety legislation and enforcement procedures
- Ability to manage a caseload independently and work to deadlines
- Strong communication skills and a confident, professional manner when dealing with businesses
- Full driving licence and access to a vehicle for site visits
Desirable
- Experience of food standards as well as food hygiene work
- Experience of investigating outbreaks and preparing cases for formal action
- Experience of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, including appeals and re-rating requests
- Experience working in a local authority in the East Midlands
