Vivid Resourcing
Location: Tees Valley
Contract: Interim
About the role
Our client, a combined authority in the North East of England, is looking for a Financial Improvement Consultant to join its finance function on an interim basis. The successful candidate will review current financial processes and controls, identify where they can be strengthened, and help put practical changes in place.
The role is project-focused and involves working closely with finance colleagues and budget holders across the organisation. The Financial Improvement Consultant will analyse existing arrangements, test them against good practice and present clear recommendations, then support their delivery so that improvements are embedded rather than left on paper.
The organisation operates in a public sector environment, so a strong grasp of accountability, transparency and value for money is important. Rate, start date and duration will be confirmed with candidates.

- Review existing financial processes, controls and reporting arrangements and identify areas for improvement

- Support budget setting, budget monitoring and forecasting, and strengthen the quality of management information
- Work with budget holders and senior stakeholders to improve financial understanding and ownership
- Identify and support the delivery of savings, efficiencies and improved value for money
- Prepare clear reports, briefings and action plans for finance leadership and governance groups
- Support internal and external audit requirements and help address audit recommendations
- Contribute to the development of financial policies, procedures and guidance
- Support finance colleagues through change, sharing knowledge and good practice where appropriate
Requirements
- Substantial experience in a senior finance, financial improvement or finance consultancy role
- Experience working with local government, combined authorities or other public sector bodies
- Sound knowledge of public sector financial management, governance and reporting requirements
- Strong analytical skills and the ability to turn financial data into clear, actionable recommendations
- Experience of reviewing and improving financial controls, processes and systems
- Confident communicator, able to work with senior stakeholders and non-finance colleagues
- A recognised accountancy qualification (CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA, ICAEW or equivalent) or equivalent relevant experience
