The Role

As a Housing Triage Officer, you will be the first point of contact for residents approaching the Council with housing or homelessness-related issues, carrying out initial assessments and identifying the most appropriate pathway to prevent or relieve homelessness.

  • Identify cases requiring a full Housing Options assessment and make appropriate referrals.
  • Assess housing circumstances, support needs, risks and vulnerability.
  • Explore options including private rented accommodation, social housing, mediation, tenancy sustainment and homelessness prevention.
  • Complete appropriate Personal Housing Plans (PHPs) and ensure cases are progressed within statutory timescales.
  • Make appropriate referrals to internal teams and external agencies where additional support is required.
  • Provide clear and accurate housing advice to customers, often dealing with complex and vulnerable households.
  • Maintain accurate case records and ensure all decisions and actions are properly documented.
  • Work closely with Housing Options, Allocations, Temporary Accommodation and other partner services.
  • Contribute towards homelessness prevention and wider service performance targets.

We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Previous experience working within a Local Authority Housing/Homelessness service.
  • Strong understanding of Housing Act 1996 Part VI & VII.

  • Experience identifying and preventing homelessness at the earliest opportunity.
  • Understanding of Personal Housing Plans, S184 decision-making and statutory homelessness processes.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Experience working with vulnerable customers and complex housing cases.
  • Ability to manage a busy caseload and prioritise effectively.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Local Authority experience is essential.
