About the role

Our client, a law firm in South London, is looking for a Court of Protection Solicitor to join their team on a locum basis for 6 months. The role involves managing a court of protection caseload and supporting the team with a steady flow of client work. An immediate start is available.

You will take conduct of matters from instruction through to conclusion, advising clients, families and professionals on the protection of those who lack capacity to make decisions for themselves. The successful candidate will bring sound technical knowledge, good judgement and a considered, client-focused approach. This is a practical, hands-on assignment where your experience will be put to work from the outset.

Main responsibilities

  • Manage a caseload of court of protection matters, including property and financial affairs and health and welfare applications
  • Prepare and issue applications for deputyship and related orders
  • Advise deputies, attorneys, families and professionals on their duties and the options available
  • Handle statutory wills, gifts and other applications to the Court of Protection where required
  • Prepare annual reports, accounts and correspondence for the Office of the Public Guardian
  • Liaise with the court, local authorities, healthcare professionals and other third parties
  • Maintain accurate file notes, deadlines and case records in line with firm procedures
  • Keep clients and their families informed and handle sensitive conversations with clarity and care
  • Comply with regulatory, compliance and file management requirements

Requirements

  • Qualified solicitor in England and Wales with a current practising certificate
  • Relevant experience handling court of protection matters
  • Sound knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and court of protection procedure
  • Experience managing a caseload independently and working to deadlines
  • Strong drafting and client communication skills, with a considered approach to sensitive matters
  • The ability to work from the office in South London

The offer

  • A locum role based in South London, with office presence required
