Contracts Lawyer

Vivid Resourcing

Location: Salford, UK
Contract: Locum

About the role

Our client, a UK university, is looking for an experienced Contracts Lawyer to join its legal team on a locum basis. The role provides legal support across the institution’s commercial activity, advising on the drafting, negotiation and management of a broad range of contracts.

You will work with colleagues across professional services and academic departments, including procurement, research and partnerships teams. The workload is likely to cover supplier and service agreements, collaboration and research contracts, data sharing arrangements and partnership agreements, alongside variations, renewals and queries on live contracts.

The role suits a lawyer who is comfortable running their own matters and explaining legal points clearly to non-lawyers. Experience of contracting in a university or wider public sector setting will help you settle in quickly.

Main responsibilities
  • Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, including service, supply and partnership agreements
  • Advise on research collaboration, funding and data sharing agreements
  • Support procurement activity and advise on public procurement requirements where they apply
  • Advise on contract variations, extensions, termination and breach
  • Review key contract terms, including liability, indemnities, intellectual property and data protection
  • Provide clear, practical written advice to internal clients and senior stakeholders
  • Support colleagues in managing contractual risk and compliance
  • Maintain accurate records of advice given and matters handled
  • Work with the wider legal team to share knowledge and manage the caseload
Requirements

Essential

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive, or equivalent legal qualification
  • Substantial post-qualification experience in contract law and commercial contracting
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload independently and to deadlines
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and communication skills
  • Confident advising non-legal colleagues at different levels of seniority

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a university, higher education or wider public sector legal team
  • Working knowledge of public procurement law
  • Experience of research, intellectual property or data sharing agreements
The offer
  • Locum position based in Salford
  • Rate, start date and duration to be confirmed with candidates
  • The chance to work on a varied contracts portfolio alongside an established legal team
