Contracts Lawyer

Vivid Resourcing

Location: London, UK
Contract: Locum

About the role

Our client, a London local authority, is looking for an experienced Contracts Lawyer to join its legal team on a locum basis. The role provides legal support across the council’s commercial and procurement activity, advising internal clients on the drafting, negotiation and management of a range of contracts.

You will work closely with service departments, procurement colleagues and senior officers, giving clear and practical advice on contractual risk, procurement compliance and the legal framework that applies to public sector contracting. The workload is likely to include a mix of new contracts, variations, renewals and disputes arising from existing arrangements.

The role suits a lawyer who is comfortable running their own matters, working to deadlines and explaining legal points to non-lawyers. Experience of contracting in a public sector setting will help you settle in quickly.

Main responsibilities
  • Draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts, including service, supply and framework agreements
  • Advise on public procurement law and support officers through tendering and award processes
  • Provide legal advice on contract variations, extensions, terminations and breach
  • Support internal clients on contract management issues and risk
  • Review and advise on contract terms, liability, indemnities, data protection and other key provisions
  • Prepare clear written advice and guidance for officers and senior stakeholders
  • Maintain accurate records of advice given and matters handled
  • Work with colleagues across the legal team to share knowledge and manage the wider caseload
Requirements

Essential

  • Qualified solicitor, barrister or Chartered Legal Executive, or equivalent legal qualification
  • Substantial post-qualification experience in contract law and commercial contracting
  • Working knowledge of public procurement law
  • Ability to manage a varied caseload independently and to deadlines
  • Strong drafting, negotiation and communication skills
  • Confident advising non-legal colleagues at different levels of seniority

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a local authority or wider public sector legal team
  • Experience of procurement under the Procurement Act 2023
  • Experience advising on construction, IT or social care contracts
The offer
  • Locum position based in London
  • Rate, start date and duration to be confirmed with candidates
  • The chance to work on a broad portfolio of public sector contracts alongside an established legal team
