About the role
Our client is an architecture practice looking to appoint an ARB registered Architect to work on projects with a strong town planning focus. The role suits an architect who understands that good design and a successful planning outcome go hand in hand, and who is comfortable taking schemes from early concept through to planning submission and beyond.
The successful candidate will work on a varied mix of projects, producing well-considered design proposals that respond to site constraints, local policy and the requirements of planning authorities. You will contribute to pre-application discussions, prepare the drawings and supporting documents needed for applications, and help shape design strategies that stand up to scrutiny from planners, consultees and local communities.
You will work closely with colleagues across the practice, including planning consultants, technical staff and clients, and you will have the chance to take real ownership of your projects. Details of working arrangements and location will be confirmed with candidates.
Main responsibilities
- Develop architectural designs from concept stage through to planning submission and technical coordination
- Prepare planning application drawings, design and access statements and other supporting design documentation
- Assess site constraints and opportunities, and interpret local and national planning policy to inform design decisions
- Take part in pre-application meetings and discussions with planning officers, consultees and stakeholders
- Respond to planning feedback and revise proposals to support successful outcomes
- Coordinate with planning consultants, engineers and other design team members
- Manage project workload, deadlines and quality across your own schemes
- Support client communication and present design proposals clearly and confidently
- Contribute to the mentoring and development of less experienced members of the team
Requirements
Essential
- Registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB)
- Proven experience as an Architect working on projects that go through the UK planning system
- Sound understanding of planning policy, planning applications and the pre-application process
- Strong design ability, with experience producing clear and compelling planning drawings and documents
- Proficiency in CAD or BIM software, such as AutoCAD, Revit or equivalent
- Good communication skills, with the confidence to engage clients, consultants and planning authorities
Desirable
- RIBA membership or chartered status
- Experience on residential, mixed-use or commercial schemes
- Experience working closely with town planners or planning consultants
- Familiarity with appeals and design review processes
- Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff
