Job Opportunity: Transport Planner

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
Position: Transport Planner
Salary: £30k–£40k (dependent on experience)

About the Company:

We are working with a well-established and progressive transport consultancy based in Newcastle, with a strong presence across the North East and wider UK. The consultancy provides transport planning and development infrastructure advice on a wide range of projects, including residential, mixed-use, commercial, and regeneration schemes.

Their project portfolio spans small-scale developments through to major strategic sites, working closely with developers, planning consultants, and local authorities to deliver practical and policy-compliant transport solutions.

Due to a healthy pipeline of development-led work across the North East and beyond, the consultancy is looking to appoint a Transport Planner to join its growing Newcastle team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a transport planner looking to develop their technical skills and gain exposure to a diverse range of projects within a supportive consultancy environment.

The Role:

As a Transport Planner, you will support the delivery of transport planning inputs for development projects, from early feasibility and pre-application stages through to planning submission and determination.

You will work alongside senior colleagues and engage with clients, local planning authorities, and highway authorities, helping to provide clear, proportionate, and commercially aware transport advice to support successful planning outcomes.

The role offers strong technical development, increasing client exposure, and a clear pathway for progression to Senior Transport Planner level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, Delivery & Servicing Plans, and technical notes to support planning applications.

  • Provide transport planning input at feasibility, pre-application, and application stages for development projects across the North East and UK.

  • Undertake junction capacity assessments and review traffic modelling outputs.

  • Support discussions relating to planning conditions, S106 agreements, and transport mitigation measures.

  • Coordinate with planners, engineers, and other technical specialists within multidisciplinary teams.

  • Manage project tasks, deadlines, and inputs effectively with support from senior staff.

  • Develop a strong understanding of local transport policy, the NPPF, and national planning guidance.

About You:

We are seeking a transport planning professional with:

  • A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related discipline.

  • Experience working on UK development planning projects within a consultancy or local authority environment.

  • A good understanding of the UK planning system and transport evidence requirements.

  • Experience assisting with or preparing Transport Assessments and engaging with local authorities.

  • Some familiarity with junction modelling software (e.g. Junctions 9, LinSig, PICADY/ARCADY – desirable but not essential).

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • A proactive, enthusiastic, and solutions-focused approach.

Why Join This Company?

This is a great opportunity to join a respected regional consultancy that offers:

  • A competitive regional salary and benefits package.

  • Clear and structured career progression to Senior Transport Planner level.

  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.

  • A supportive, collaborative team culture within a growing Newcastle office.

  • Ongoing training and support towards professional accreditation (e.g. CIHT / TPS).

  • The opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of development and regeneration projects across the North East and UK.
