Location: West Yorkshire
Position: Senior Transport Planner
Salary: £35k–£45k (dependent on experience)
About the Company:
We are working with a well-established and growing transport consultancy based in West Yorkshire, with a strong presence across Yorkshire, the North of England, and the wider UK. The consultancy provides high-quality transport planning and development infrastructure advice across a broad range of sectors, including residential, mixed-use, commercial, logistics, retail, and strategic regeneration schemes.
Their project portfolio ranges from small-scale urban developments through to major strategic allocations and town-centre regeneration sites. They work closely with developers, land promoters, planning consultants, and local authorities to deliver commercially aware, policy-compliant, and deliverable transport solutions.
Due to continued growth and a strong pipeline of development-led projects across Yorkshire and beyond, the consultancy is looking to appoint a Senior Transport Planner to join its team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced transport planner seeking greater responsibility, client ownership, and the chance to play a key role in project delivery and team development within a collaborative consultancy environment.
The Role:
As a Senior Transport Planner, you will take a leading role in delivering transport planning inputs for a wide range of development projects, from early feasibility and site promotion stages through to planning submission, negotiation, and determination.
You will manage projects, liaise directly with clients and local authorities, and provide clear, proportionate, and commercially focused transport advice to support successful planning outcomes.
The role offers strong progression prospects, including opportunities to support business development, mentor junior staff, and contribute to the continued growth of the office.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the preparation and review of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, Delivery & Servicing Plans, and supporting technical documents.
Provide strategic transport planning advice at feasibility, pre-application, and application stages.
Undertake and oversee junction capacity assessments and traffic modelling (e.g. Junctions 9, LinSig, PICADY/ARCADY).
Lead discussions and negotiations with local planning authorities and highway authorities.
Advise on planning conditions, Section 106 agreements, and transport mitigation strategies.
Manage multiple projects, ensuring delivery to programme, budget, and quality standards.
Mentor and support junior team members, reviewing technical work and providing guidance.
Develop and maintain strong client relationships and contribute to new business opportunities.
Maintain a strong understanding of local and regional transport policy, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities planning framework, and the National Planning Policy Framework.
About You:
We are seeking a motivated and capable Senior Transport Planner with:
A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related discipline.
Several years’ experience working on UK development planning projects within a consultancy or local authority environment.
A strong understanding of the UK planning system and transport evidence requirements.
Proven experience preparing and leading Transport Assessments and engaging directly with local authorities.
Experience using junction modelling software such as Junctions 9, LinSig, and PICADY/ARCADY.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Experience managing projects and supporting junior colleagues.
A proactive, commercially aware, and solutions-focused approach.
Chartered status or progress towards professional accreditation (e.g. CIHT / TPS) would be advantageous.
Why Join This Company?
This is an excellent opportunity to join a respected regional consultancy that offers:
A competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
Clear and structured career progression beyond Senior Transport Planner level.
Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.
A supportive and collaborative team culture within a growing Wakefield office.
Ongoing training and support towards professional accreditation (e.g. CIHT / TPS).
The opportunity to work on a varied portfolio of high-profile development and regeneration projects across Yorkshire and the UK.
