SCADA Engineer (Solar PV & BESS) – Freelance

Location: Remote with regular site visits and travel to our client’s office in Southern Denmark (close to the German border)

The Opportunity

Our client is seeking an experienced SCADA Engineer to support the delivery of utility-scale renewable energy projects across Denmark. This is an exciting opportunity for a skilled professional with a strong background in Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and industrial control systems to take ownership of the design, implementation, and integration of SCADA solutions from the ground up.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary EPC project team, you will play a key role throughout the project lifecycle, from design and integration through commissioning and operational handover.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and implement SCADA systems for utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
• Lead the development and implementation of SCADA functionality from scratch, ensuring a robust and scalable system architecture.
• Manage SCADA integration across plant equipment, control systems and communication networks.
• Configure, validate and optimise communication architectures between field devices, plant controllers and central monitoring platforms.
• Execute testing, commissioning and troubleshooting of SCADA, communication and control systems during project delivery.
• Support the integration of plant systems with grid operators and external stakeholders, ensuring compliance with all technical requirements.
• Ensure reliable data acquisition, monitoring and reporting throughout construction, commissioning and commercial operation.
• Collaborate closely with engineering, commissioning, grid compliance and operations teams to ensure successful project execution.
• Prepare technical documentation, commissioning reports, as-built documentation and operational procedures.
• Perform root cause analysis and resolve system performance issues during commissioning and operational phases.
• Contribute to continuous improvements in SCADA architecture, plant monitoring solutions and industrial cybersecurity.

Essential Requirements

• Danish resident with the ability to travel to sites and our client’s office in Southern Denmark.
• Fluent English speaker with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proven experience delivering SCADA systems within utility-scale renewable energy projects.
• Demonstrable experience with Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
• Experience designing and implementing SCADA systems from scratch.
• Strong understanding of industrial control systems, plant communications, monitoring platforms and data acquisition.
• Practical experience with SCADA system architecture, integration, testing and commissioning.
• Hands-on troubleshooting experience with communication and control systems.
• Strong knowledge of communication protocols including:
  • Modbus TCP/IP
  • Modbus RTU
  • Ethernet-based communication systems
  • Industrial networking concepts
• Experience working with plant control systems, grid interfaces and utility-scale renewable energy assets.
• Ability to work effectively within a fast-paced EPC project environment.
• Strong stakeholder management and communication skills.

Desirable Experience

• Extensive experience with SCADA systems for Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
• Knowledge of Power Plant Controllers (PPC) and hybrid plant control concepts.
• Experience working on utility-scale, grid-connected renewable energy projects.
• Familiarity with IEC standards and other relevant industry frameworks.
• Understanding of industrial control system cybersecurity principles and best practices.
