Senior Private Sector Housing Officer
6‑Month Contract | £48–£50 per hour | 37 Hours per Week | 1 Day in Office
A respected and forward‑thinking local authority is looking for an experienced Senior Private Sector Housing Officer to join their team on a flexible 6‑month assignment. This is an excellent opportunity for someone seeking a senior‑level role, a fresh challenge, or the chance to make a tangible impact on housing standards within the private rented sector.
You’ll play a key role in ensuring properties are safe, compliant, and well‑managed—taking the lead on inspections, enforcement, HMO licensing, and complex housing standards work.
Key Responsibilities
🔍 Inspections & Enforcement
- Conduct HHSRS inspections across a range of private rented sector properties
- Identify hazards, draft schedules of work and prepare/issue statutory notices
- Lead on enforcement activity including Improvement Notices, Prohibition Orders & Civil Penalties
- Manage complex and high‑risk cases involving disrepair, overcrowding, and category 1 & 2 hazards
🏘️ Licensing & Compliance
- Oversee compliance with mandatory HMO licensing
- Carry out property assessments, licence condition checks and follow‑up inspections
- Support selective or additional licensing schemes (if applicable)
- Provide landlords with clear advice around safety, compliance and improvement works
🛠️ Housing Standards & Technical Advice
- Provide expert guidance to tenants, landlords, legal teams and partner services
- Work collaboratively with Environmental Health, Housing, Repairs, and external agencies
- Support wider initiatives aimed at improving housing standards
- Prepare accurate case notes, reports, and evidence packages for legal proceedings
What We’re Looking For
- Extensive experience in Private Sector Housing (essential)
- Strong knowledge of the Housing Act 2004, HHSRS & enforcement processes
- Proven background managing enforcement cases from start to finish
- Confident working with landlords, tenants, and multi‑agency partners
- Experience with HMOs, licensing, disrepair and complex housing cases
- Ability to work independently, make sound decisions and manage a varied caseload
- Availability to start soon or within a reasonable timeframe
