Senior Private Sector Housing Officer
6‑Month Contract | £48–£50 per hour | 37 Hours per Week | 1 Day in Office
A highly regarded local authority is seeking an experienced Senior Private Sector Housing Officer to join their team on a flexible 6‑month contract. This role is ideal for someone looking for a step up, a fresh challenge, or a chance to work in a well‑supported and forward‑thinking housing team.
This position focuses on improving standards within the private rented sector, ensuring compliance with housing legislation, and supporting residents to live in safe, secure homes.
Key Responsibilities
Inspections & Enforcement
- Carry out comprehensive inspections under the Housing Health & Safety Rating System (HHSRS)
- Identify hazards, prepare schedules of work, and issue statutory notices
- Lead on enforcement action including Improvement Notices, Prohibition Orders, and Civil Penalties
- Manage complex cases involving disrepair, overcrowding, and category 1 & 2 hazards
Licensing & Compliance
- Oversee compliance with mandatory HMO licensing
- Undertake property assessments and licence condition checks
- Assist in monitoring selective or additional licensing schemes if applicable
- Advise landlords on compliance requirements and improvement works
Housing Standards & Advice
- Provide expert technical advice to landlords, tenants, and stakeholders
- Work collaboratively with environmental health, legal teams, repairs, and external partners
- Support initiatives to raise property standards across the private rented sector
- Prepare reports, case notes, and evidence files for legal proceedings
What We’re Looking For
- Extensive experience in Private Sector Housing (essential)
- Strong understanding of the Housing Act 2004, HHSRS, and enforcement procedures
- Experience handling enforcement cases from start to finish
- Confident in liaising with landlords, tenants, and partner agencies
- Ability to manage workload independently and make sound decisions
- Experience with HMOs, licensing, and complex disrepair cases
- Availability to start soon or within a reasonable timeframe
