Job Opportunity: Principal Transport Planner
Location: London
Position: Principal Transport Planner
Salary: £50k+ (dependent on experience)

About the Company:

We are working with a well-established and forward-thinking transport consultancy based in London. The firm has a strong presence across the capital and a growing national footprint, delivering high-quality transport planning and development infrastructure advice on major residential, mixed-use, commercial, and regeneration schemes.

Due to a sustained pipeline of development-led work across London and the South East, the consultancy is seeking to appoint a Principal Transport Planner to play a senior role within its expanding London team.

This is an excellent opportunity to take a lead role on high-profile and complex development projects across London, while contributing to the growth, mentoring, and strategic direction of a well-regarded consultancy.

The Role:

As a Principal Transport Planner, you will take technical and project leadership responsibility for a wide range of development planning projects, from early feasibility and site promotion through to planning determination and delivery.

You will act as a trusted advisor to clients, lead engagement with local planning authorities and highway authorities, and oversee the preparation and review of technical transport evidence. The role also includes line management responsibilities and active involvement in business development.

This position offers a clear pathway to Associate level for the right individual.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee the preparation of Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Travel Plans, and technical notes for major planning applications.

  • Provide high-level transport planning advice at feasibility, pre-application, and application stages.

  • Manage and lead client relationships, acting as the primary point of contact on key projects.

  • Review and direct junction capacity assessments, traffic modelling, and technical analysis.

  • Lead negotiations relating to planning conditions, S106 agreements, and highway mitigation strategies.

  • Line manage, mentor, and support junior members of the transport planning team.

  • Manage project programmes, budgets, and resourcing effectively.

  • Contribute to business development activities, bids, and client growth.

  • Stay up to date with London Plan policy, local transport policy, and national planning guidance.

About You:

We are seeking an experienced transport planning professional with:

  • A degree in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, or a related discipline.

  • Significant experience in UK development-led transport planning, ideally within a consultancy environment.

  • A strong understanding of the UK planning system and London-specific transport policy and processes.

  • Proven experience leading Transport Assessments and negotiating with highway authorities and TfL.

  • Knowledge of junction modelling and microsimulation tools (e.g. Junctions 9, LinSig, VISSIM – desirable).

  • Experience managing projects, budgets, and junior staff.

  • Excellent written, verbal, and stakeholder engagement skills.

  • A proactive, commercially aware, and solutions-focused approach.

  • Working towards or holding professional accreditation (e.g. TPS, CIHT – desirable).

Why Join This Company?

This is an outstanding opportunity to join a respected consultancy that offers:

  • A competitive salary of £50k+ and a comprehensive benefits package.

  • A clear and supported progression route to Associate and beyond.

  • Flexible and hybrid working arrangements.

  • A collaborative, inclusive, and professional team culture within a growing London office.

  • Ongoing professional development and support towards chartership.

  • The opportunity to lead high-profile development and regeneration projects across London and the South East.
