About the Role:
We are working with a well-established Housing Association in the Manchester area who are looking for an experienced Income Officer to strengthen their team. This role is a great opportunity to make a real difference by supporting tenants to manage their rent and sustain their homes, while helping the organisation maximise rental income.
Key Responsibilities:
Manage rent accounts across a defined patch, ensuring prompt and proactive action to prevent arrears from escalating
Engage with tenants through phone calls, visits, and meetings, providing advice on rent payments, Housing Benefit, Universal Credit, and other financial assistance
Negotiate realistic repayment arrangements with residents and signpost them to welfare or debt advice services when necessary
Take appropriate enforcement action where arrears persist, including preparing and serving legal notices, producing court documentation, and attending hearings
Work collaboratively with colleagues across housing management, tenancy sustainment, and external partner agencies to provide a joined-up service for residents
Maintain accurate case records, monitoring arrears levels and producing performance reports as required
Ensure all actions are taken in line with legislation, policies, and procedures while maintaining a customer-focused approach
Balance the need for income collection with empathy and support, helping residents remain in their homes wherever possible
What We’re Looking For:
Previous experience as an Income Officer, Rent Officer, or similar within a housing association or local authority
Strong knowledge of welfare reform, Universal Credit, and Housing Benefit processes
Excellent communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently, manage a busy caseload, and meet tight deadlines
Confident in handling challenging conversations and taking enforcement action where necessary
Strong team player, able to work collaboratively with internal colleagues and external partners
