Job Title: HMO Inspection Officer

Location: Local Authority
Contract: 6-Month Fixed Term
Hours: 3 Days onsite, 2 days from home (FULL TIME)
Rate: £42 per hour


About the Role

We are seeking an experienced HMO Inspection Officer to join our local authority team on a short-term contract. You will be responsible for managing the end-to-end process of HMO inspections, ensuring compliance with housing standards and relevant legislation.


Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct full inspections of Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) in line with local authority and statutory requirements.
  • Assess property conditions, fire safety measures, and occupancy standards.
  • Prepare detailed inspection reports and issue compliance notices where necessary.
  • Liaise with landlords, tenants, and internal teams to resolve issues and ensure timely compliance.
  • Manage follow-up inspections and enforcement actions when required.
  • Maintain accurate records and contribute to data reporting for the authority.

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Proven experience in HMO inspections within a local authority or similar regulatory environment.
  • Strong knowledge of Housing Act 2004, HMO licensing requirements, and housing health & safety rating system (HHSRS).
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills for dealing with landlords and tenants.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a caseload efficiently.
  • Competent in report writing and using relevant IT systems.

Desirable

  • Relevant professional qualification (e.g., Environmental Health, Housing Standards).
  • Experience in enforcement and legal processes related to housing compliance.
