Interim Head of Finance & Accounting – Freelance Consultant

Brussels (Hybrid: 2 days on-site, 3 days remote)
Freelance / Self-Employed (ITA Certified)
Long-term mission: 3–5 years


Company Overview

We are partnering with a technology-driven organisation based in Brussels, active in the public services and pensions sector. As a subsidiary of a larger group, the company develops its own internal software solutions to support its operations and services.

They are currently seeking an experienced freelance Head of Finance & Accounting to lead their finance function through a phase of strategic development and operational improvement.


Role Overview

This is a leadership-focused finance role, best suited for a hands-on professional with strong managerial skills and a proactive, structured approach to finance operations. The emphasis is on team leadership, financial oversight, and strategic input, rather than deep technical expertise.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a finance team of 8 (5 Dutch speakers, 3 French speakers).
  • Oversee all budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis activities.
  • Assess and enhance current accounting systems and workflows.
  • Define and drive the company’s financial and administrative strategy in alignment with broader organisational goals.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting and compliance.
  • Provide insight and direction on the company’s evolving finance needs and structure.
  • Liaise effectively with internal stakeholders and external partners.

Candidate Profile

  • Self-employed/freelance status required.
  • ITA certified with a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a senior finance role.
  • Proven leadership and team management experience in finance.
  • Background in pension funds or public sector organisations is an advantage.
  • Fluent in Dutch; working knowledge of French and English is a plus (but not essential).
  • Comfortable working with older or basic accounting systems.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking; able to guide both people and process.
  • Looking for a long-term commitment (3–5 years).
