Interim Head of Democratic Services
Location: South East England (Hybrid Working)
Rate: Competitive day rate (Inside IR35)
Contract: Interim – 3 to 6 months, full-time

We are supporting a local authority in the South East of England in their search for an experienced Interim Head of Democratic Services. This key leadership role will provide strategic oversight and operational direction for democratic functions during a critical period of transition.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and manage the Democratic Services team, ensuring the effective delivery of all committee and governance functions.
Advise elected members and senior officers on constitutional, procedural, and governance matters.
Oversee the smooth running of Full Council (held every couple of months) and the Corporate Management Committee (held monthly), ensuring these high-profile meetings are professionally managed and legally compliant.
Support the delivery of council meetings and maintain compliance with statutory requirements.
Oversee member support, civic functions, and contribute to wider corporate governance objectives.
Drive improvements in democratic engagement and transparency.
Ideal Candidate:
Proven leadership experience in local authority Democratic Services or Governance.
In-depth knowledge of local government law, constitutional procedures, and committee structures.
Politically astute, with strong relationship-building skills across senior stakeholders and elected members.
Able to lead through change, motivate teams, and ensure high standards of service delivery.
