Freelance Machinery Safety Expert (Robotics / Industrial Automation)

Location: Remote (Home‑based) with occasional on‑site visits near Stockholm, Sweden
Duration: 6‑month initial freelance contract (extension expected)

About the Role

Our client—an innovative robotics manufacturer— is building a new state‑of‑the‑art production facility near Stockholm. To support this major expansion, they are seeking an experienced Freelance Machinery Safety Expert with strong knowledge of industrial automation, robotics safety standards, and global compliance frameworks.

This consultant will play a critical role in ensuring the safe integration, installation, and commissioning of robotic systems, automated machinery, and electrical equipment within the new factory environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead functional and technical safety assessments for automated machinery, robotic systems, and supporting production equipment.
  • Ensure full compliance with applicable EU, North American, and international machinery and electrical safety standards.
  • Review, develop, and approve safety concepts, risk assessments, and technical documentation.
  • Support the design and implementation of safe electrical equipment in alignment with IEC / EN 60204‑1.
  • Oversee the application of robotic safety standards including:
    • ISO 10218 (Industrial Robots & Robot Systems Safety)
    • RIA R15.06 (North America equivalent)
  • Provide guidance on electrical, control panel, and automation safety with respect to:
    • NFPA 79
    • UL 1740
    • UL 508A
  • Ensure all systems meet EU Machinery Regulation / Directive and relevant EMC requirements.
  • Work cross‑functionally with mechanical, electrical, controls, and software engineers to ensure safety is integrated into system design.
  • Conduct design reviews, hazard analyses (FMEA, HAZOP, risk matrices), and safety validation activities.
  • Advise on safe commissioning, operator training requirements, and documentation (SISTEMA, technical files, CE/UKCA compliance, where appropriate).
  • Provide periodic on‑site support near Stockholm for audits, workshops, and equipment verification.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 7+ years of experience in machinery safety, industrial automation, or robotics safety.
  • Proven expertise in applying:
    • IEC / EN 60204‑1 – Electrical equipment of machines
    • ISO 10218 / RIA R15.06 – Robot system safety
    • NFPA 79, UL 1740, UL 508A – North American electrical & robotic safety
    • EU Machinery Regulation / Directive and EMC requirements
  • Strong understanding of industrial control systems, safeguarding hardware (light curtains, interlocks, safety PLCs), and safe motion.
  • Experience with risk assessment methodologies and safety lifecycle processes.
  • Background in robotics, automated production lines, or large‑scale industrial equipment integration.
  • Ability to produce and review safety-related documentation to certification standards.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Nice-to-Have

  • Experience supporting factory build-outs or new production line installations.
  • Familiarity with collaborative robots (cobots) and advanced robot-human interaction safety.
  • Knowledge of Safety Integrity Levels (SIL/PL), PAScal/SISTEMA tools.
  • Swedish language skills (not required).
