Freelance DevOps / Build Systems Engineer (Starlark / Bazel) – Defence Sector
Location: Fully Remote (Germany preferred, EU acceptable)
Contract Length: 2 Years (Freelance / B2B)

Rate: €85–€90 per hour
Role Overview
Our client in the German defence sector is seeking an experienced Starlark / Bazel Build Engineer to support the creation of a new DevOps and internal build environment for next‑generation sensor systems. This is a long‑term, highly technical freelance role working within a modern, safety‑critical engineering environment.
The ideal candidate brings strong expertise in Bazel/Starlark, a background in embedded or safety‑critical systems, and experience contributing to high‑reliability toolchains. Additional experience with Rust, algorithms, or radar/sensor systems is a strong advantage.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and maintain a new Bazel/Starlark-based DevOps & build infrastructure
- Build and support internal development tools for sensor‑related software ecosystems
- Collaborate with software, algorithms, and sensor engineering teams
- Ensure build, test, and deployment pipelines follow safety‑critical best practices
- Support integration of Rust-based components
- Contribute to long-term architecture decisions and CI/CD improvements
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong hands‑on experience with Bazel / Starlark (mandatory)
- Background in DevOps tooling, build systems, internal toolchain development
- Experience working on embedded, avionics, defence, or safety‑critical systems
- Familiarity with Rust (reading/writing beneficial, not full-time programming)
- Strong understanding of software quality, versioning, and complex build environments
- Excellent communication skills in English
- German-speaking is a plus but not required
Highly Desirable
- DO‑178, IEC 61508, or similar safety-critical development experience
- Experience with algorithms, signal processing, or radar/sensor systems
- Background in aerospace/defence software tooling
- Experience supporting multi-team environments and large-scale build systems
