Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to support service delivery in Lochgilphead. The post will involve delivering the full range of statutory environmental health functions, with a particular focus on responding to service requests across public health, environmental protection, licensing, planning consultations, health and safety, and food safety. The role is offered on a hybrid basis, with a requirement to be present within the Argyll and Bute area three days per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver the full range of statutory environmental health functions in line with legislation and council policies

  • Respond to environmental health service requests relating to public health and environmental protection

  • Undertake licensing and planning consultations, providing professional advice and recommendations

  • Carry out health and safety interventions and investigations as required

  • Conduct food safety inspections, including routine inspections where authorised

  • Liaise effectively with internal departments, external agencies, businesses, and members of the public

  • Maintain accurate records and reports in accordance with statutory requirements

Requirements

Qualifications / Skills & Experience

  • Qualified Environmental Health Officer

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working within a local authority or in an agency capacity in a similar local authority role

  • Strong working knowledge of environmental health legislation and enforcement practices

  • Ability to manage workload independently and prioritise effectively

  • Excellent communication and report-writing skills

Essential

  • Qualified EHO status

  • Access to own transport and ability to drive

  • Willingness to work on site within Argyll and Bute at least three days per week

Desirable

  • Authorisation to undertake food safety inspections (candidates without food safety authorisation will still be considered)

  • Previous experience working across rural or geographically diverse local authority areas

Additional Information

  • Location: Lochgilphead (Hybrid working model)

  • Hours: 28–35 hours per week

  • Contract Duration: Initial 4-month contract, with the option to extend

  • Start Date: ASAP

  • IR35: Inside IR35
