Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Environmental Health Officer (EHO) to support service delivery in Oban. The role involves delivering the full range of statutory environmental health functions, with a particular focus on responding to service requests across public health, environmental protection, licensing and planning consultations, health and safety, and food safety. The position is offered on a hybrid basis, requiring on-site presence within Argyll and Bute three days per week.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver the full range of statutory environmental health services in line with relevant legislation and council policies

  • Respond to environmental health service requests relating to public health and environmental protection

  • Provide professional input into licensing and planning consultations

  • Undertake health and safety inspections, interventions, and investigations

  • Carry out food safety inspections, including routine inspections where authorised

  • Engage with businesses, residents, and partner agencies to promote compliance and best practice

  • Maintain accurate case records, reports, and statutory documentation

Requirements

Qualifications / Skills & Experience

  • Qualified Environmental Health Officer

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience working within a local authority or in an agency capacity in a comparable role

  • Sound knowledge of environmental health legislation and enforcement procedures

  • Ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities effectively

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Essential

  • Qualified EHO status

  • Full UK driving licence with access to own transport

  • Availability to work on site within Argyll and Bute at least three days per week

Desirable

  • Food safety authorisation

  • Experience working in a rural or mixed urban/rural local authority setting

Additional Information

  • Location: Oban (Hybrid working)

  • Hours: 28–35 hours per week

  • Contract Duration: Initial 4-month contract, with potential for extension

  • Start Date: ASAP
