Freelance Software Architect (Automotive – Linux, Amplifiers, IC & HMI)
Location: Hybrid (Remote + On‑site visits in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany)
Duration: 6‑month initial contract (extension possible)
Start: ASAP
Engagement: Freelance / Contract
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Freelance Software Architect to support an advanced automotive development project in Germany. The role focuses on system‑level architecture for audio amplifiers, embedded Linux platforms, system hardening, and integration topics spanning ICs, connectivity, and HMI/UX components.
The ideal consultant combines deep technical architecture expertise with hands‑on engineering experience in complex in‑vehicle systems. You will collaborate closely with cross‑functional hardware/software teams and lead architectural decisions for next‑generation automotive modules.
Key Responsibilities
- Define and drive the software architecture for amplifier‑based automotive systems, including signal processing components and system integration.
- Architect, evaluate, and document embedded Linux system structures, boot flows, security mechanisms, and OS‑level partitioning.
- Lead system hardening initiatives, covering secure boot, OS hardening, access control, and cybersecurity compliance aligned with automotive standards (e.g., UNECE R155/R156, ISO 21434).
- Coordinate integration of ICs (SoCs, audio DSPs, connectivity chips) within the system architecture.
- Contribute to HMI architecture for audio control, diagnostics, and user-facing functionality across vehicle interfaces.
- Align system design with automotive requirements, including safety, performance, robustness, power management, and lifecycle management.
- Work closely with software, RF, hardware, and validation teams to ensure architectural consistency across modules.
- Provide architectural documentation, decision records, and technical guidance.
- Participate in periodic on‑site workshops in Nordrhein‑Westfalen with engineering teams and stakeholders.
Required Skills & Experience
- 8+ years of experience in software architecture for embedded or automotive systems.
- Strong background in Linux-based embedded systems, BSP development, and system-level hardening.
- Proven experience with amplifiers or audio subsystems in automotive or consumer electronics.
- Knowledge of IC-level integration (SoCs, DSPs, RF/BT/Wi-Fi/GNSS chips, audio codecs).
- Familiarity with HMI frameworks, UI architecture, and integration into vehicle infotainment or telematics systems.
- Understanding of automotive communication protocols (CAN, LIN, Ethernet, A2B, MOST, etc.).
- Experience working with compliance and cybersecurity standards.
- Ability to write clean, structured architectural documentation.
- Strong communication skills and comfort working in hybrid/remote international teams.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with automotive OEM or Tier‑1 environments.
- Background in audio DSP, acoustic processing, or RF subsystem integration.
- German language skills (not mandatory).
