Associate Planner – Planning Consultancy

Location: Manchester (Hybrid Working)
Salary: Competitive, DOE + Benefits
Type: Permanent, Full-time

The Opportunity

I am currently working with a well-established and growing planning consultancy based in Manchester that is looking to appoint an Associate Planner as part of its continued expansion in the North West.

This is a client-facing role offering the chance to lead planning projects across a diverse portfolio, including residential, commercial, industrial, mixed-use, and regeneration developments. The position would suit an experienced planner seeking greater responsibility, influence over projects, and a clear progression route to Associate Director level.

The Role

As an Associate Planner, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality planning advice and managing projects from inception through to determination. You will act as a trusted advisor to clients while supporting the development of junior team members and contributing to the wider growth of the consultancy.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading and managing planning applications, pre-application submissions, and planning strategies

  • Providing commercially focused planning advice to developers, landowners, and investors

  • Preparing and overseeing planning statements, supporting reports, and representations

  • Managing project programmes, budgets, and multidisciplinary consultant teams

  • Engaging with local planning authorities and key stakeholders

  • Representing clients at meetings, public consultations, and planning committees

  • Mentoring and supporting junior planners and graduates

  • Assisting with fee proposals, tenders, and business development activity

  • Keeping up to date with planning policy and legislative changes

Candidate Profile

  • Degree in Town Planning or a related discipline

  • MRTPI qualified (or close to qualification with strong consultancy experience)

  • Typically 5+ years’ experience in a planning consultancy or private-sector environment

  • Strong knowledge of the UK planning system and development process

  • Experience managing planning projects and client relationships

  • Commercially aware with a proactive, solution-focused approach

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
