Contract – Aerospace Safety Expert
Location – Ottobrun
Contract Length – 12 Months

As part of the development of cutting-edge aeronautical technologies, our customer is integrating flight-capable hydrogen components (Systems Under Test – SUT e.g. LH2 tanks and fuel cells) into a stationary ground test facility.

This requires the methodical alignment of two distinct sets of standards:

·         The SUT components bring safety certifications and risk assessments from the aviation sector

·         while the test bench and industrial LH2 infrastructure must be secured according to classical process safety standards for ground operations.

In this context, our customer is seeking support for methodological guidance and interface analysis.

Activities:

·         Cross-System Safety Assessment (Aviation to Ground).

·         Analysis of existing safety documents for flight-capable components. Methodical use of these aviation assessments as input parameters for the industrial risk assessment of the test bench (HAZOP/ LOPA).

·         Derivation and specification of necessary independent protection layers (Safety Instrumented Functions/ SIL) for the test bench to address identified risk gaps.

·         Conceptualization, Preparation, and Facilitation of an overarching HAZOP Study.

·         Focus on the critical physical and functional interfaces of the overall system. Identification of hazards arising from system interactions and definition of plant-side mitigation measures.

·         Strategic Advancement of the Department’s Safety Approach.

·         Compilation of lessons learned from the current hydrogen project and previous test bench projects.

·         Revision and standardization of the general safety approach (methods, templates, processes) for future test projects.

·         Development of a best-practice guide for compliant and efficient integration of “airborne equipment” into industrial test benches.

Needed Skills:

Must-Have:

o    Several years of practical experience in process safety and functional safety (IEC 61508/ IEC 61511).

o    Strong methodological expertise in conducting and facilitating HAZOP studies, as well as applying LOPA.

o    Solid understanding of aviation safety methodologies (e.g., Functional Hazard Assessment, System Safety Assessment, Fault Tree Analysis) to professionally read and interpret supplier documentation.

Nice-to-Have:

o    Experience handling hydrogen, cryogenic gases (LH2), and/or fuel cells
